The next premium Bajaj motorcycle could be a Dominar based 400cc Scrambler

Trust Bajaj Auto to venture into segments, others would probably shy away from. When they aren’t doing that, they somehow create an entirely new segment of motorcycles altogether. Proof being their V15. With their latest, the Dominar 400 doing pretty well in the market, they’re long done patting their backs and are getting ready to offer something new. This time, a Scrambler!
According to a report, a few sources within Bajaj Auto have confirmed the development of a Scrambler which will be based on the Dominar 400. The bike will be launched under a new sub-brand altogether, and apparently, the manufacturer is already in the process of registering the new brand and is looking for an agency to handle PR and ad work. The news cannot be all gas either, as recently in an interview, Rajiv Bajaj, CEO, Bajaj Motorcycles had spoken about the company’s intent to launch a new premium motorcycle in the Rs.1 lakh – Rs. 2 lakh bracket. However, when asked to be more specific about the product, as always, he chose to keep everyone guessing by stating that the new bike could be a KTM, a Husqvarna, or even a new brand altogether
Bajaj will certainly look to cash in on the universal popularity of Scramblers and considering the fact that the only product in India that fits in that segment right now is a Ducati, their as usual value-for-money proposition will definitely find many takers. There are also rumors that the upcoming premium motorcycle could be the fully-faired RS400, but what finally comes out will definitely widen the choice for the Indian biker. Whatever it is, these are definitely good times to be riding a motorcycle.

TVS Akula 310cc sportsbike: 10 things you DON’T know about

1. The Akula will be the first BMW-TVS bike to hit the Indian market.

TVS and BMW have joint hands in a bid to produce a lot of interesting bikes for the future. The first bike from this collaboration is the BMW G310R. Sadly, India will not be getting the bike with the BMW nameplate any soon. However, its TVS cousin is what will be coming to the Indian market. The bike was spied testing for the first time a few days ago and is expected to come next year. The Akula will have the same underpinnings as the G310R. This is an important platform for both the companies. The main aim of the collaboration is to produce sporty bikes between 200 cc and 500 cc.

2. TVS plans to stun the market with the Akula’s pricing.

Though the bike has a larger engine when compared to the KTM Duke RC 200, Rushlane is reporting that the Akula will be priced around Rs 1.5 lakhs. This means it will take on the RC 200 in terms of pricing which is phenomenal. This will surely give KTM sleepless nights.

3. The Akula could be the first affordable bike to feature ram air injection.

TVS has already incorporated the ram air intake in the Apache 4V as a way to improve the cooling system and help them skip out on liquid cooling. However, the same could also be used to increase power as well and TVS may use this technology to improve the output figures of the Akula.
As you know, in an engine, air is sucked into the combustion chamber where fuel is also brought and the combustion takes place. In a normal bike, the air intake is located near the engine of the bike. This means that as the air comes in, it gets heated due to the heat from the engine. Hot air has lesser density which means it has lesser oxygen as well. Lesser oxygen means that it will result in a drop in power. In a ram air injection, the air intake is placed away from the engine allowing cooler air to enter the combustion chamber. Cooler air has higher density and more oxygen adding more power to the bike. This feature is mainly seen only on high end bikes. It will be very interesting if they do bring this technology into lower-end bikes.

4. Aluminum trellis frame makes it race-ready.

This bike will feature a similar kind of frame as that present in the Yamaha R15. The position of the frame is such that it has a low centre of gravity. This will make it a better handling bike. Since TVS is looking at this bike as a track focused one, the one aluminium chassis is surely going to help that. It will also be lighter and stiffer aiding track usage.

5. TVS has developed Akula’s suspension in the race track.

TVS in their introduction video of the Akula said that this one is a track focussed bike mainly. TVS already has 33 years of racing experience. This racing experience is what will be used to make the Akula a more sporty and agile bike. They want to take on the KTM RC models with this bike and that is a big thing. Since TVS has spent so much time on the track with the development of the Akula, it will certainly have great dynamics. Given that this bike is being built by an Indian manufacturer, it is a big deal.

6.Carbon fiber body work seen on the concept.

The concept that was showcased at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo had a carbon fiber body work. Sadly, that may not make it to the production version. The carbon fiber material will be replaced with plastic bits most likely. Overdrive magazine did report though that a limited run of complete carbon fiber units may make it to the market. This will be similar to the one seen at the Auto expo.

7.Launching in the second quarter of 2017

The Akula is currently being tested in the Indian market. It will therefore only be launched in the first quarter of 2017. The production ready version will feature the same 313 cc engine which does duty on the BMW G310R. It will produce 34 Bhp and 28 Nm. The engine will be mated to a 6 speed manual transmission. The engine will also be race tuned for sporty and enthusiastic ride.

8.Will be a global bike.

It’ll be built by TVS and will be sold not just in India, but globally too. TVS is one bike maker that has a global footprint. Currently it exports bikes and three wheelers to Spain, Latin America, UAE, Bangladesh, and a few African countries. Since the brand name is already popular, there is a chance that TVS may use its name to sell the bike in other global markets.

9.Many concept bits won’t make it to production

The concept that was shown at the Delhi Auto Expo in 2016 had a lot of cool stuff. Some of these however will not make it into production to keep costs competitive. When the bike was shown, it had a lot of machined aluminium bits which looked really cool. The advantage of that is light weight and high strength. Unfortunately, this will make the price go up which TVS is not willing to do. The rear end of the bike looks a lot like the R1’s tail section. That will stay, but it will not be detachable. Also, the Gyrocam is most likely going to be skipped out on.

Finally, Akula means shark in Russian.

This is the inspiration behind the bike’s racy form factor. The term ‘Akula’ means ‘shark’ and is also a class of submarines. Though we hope that TVS retains this name, in production form the Akula nameplate will most likely be dumped for a more traditional Apache RTR 300 name plate or it could even be called Akula RTR 300 if TVS wishes to retain the Akula name plate. Naming it RTR 300 will allow TVS to continue the lineage of the RTR brand name and will also help build the RTR brand name which is already common in India.

Royal Enfield owners are dumping their Bullets to buy the Bajaj Dominar

Bajaj launched the Dominar 400 in January and created big ripples in the market. The attractive price tag and the long feature list it offered captured a lot of attention. Before the launch of the Dominar, Rajiv Bajaj hinted that the Dominar would be put against the Royal Enfield motorcycles in the market. Now sales report show that the Dominar 400 is eating into the sales of the Royal Enfield. Eric Vas, President, Bajaj Auto, revealed that the two out of ten buyers of the Dominar 400 are former Royal Enfield bike owners. But why is the shift happening? Let’s find out.

So much more for so little money!

Bajaj has really loaded the Dominar with features. The bike’s the first one to offer a full LED headlamp in the affordable segments. It also comes with full-digital instrument console and a futuristic warning lamp array on the tank. The cheapest Royal Enfield is the outdated Bullet 350, and it is priced at Rs. 1.2 lakh, ex-showroom.
The Dominar 400 price starts from Rs. 1.36 lakh. For this much money, you also get better brakes, a more powerful engine and a lot of other extras that almost none of the Royal Enfields offer, even at much higher prices. In other words, the Dominar is killing it by being pure value-for-money.

Fast yet comfortable

The Royal Enfield motorcycles slowly inching forward to become modern yet, the extreme vibrations of the motorcycles are an issue with many people. All the Royal Enfield motorcycles still use pushrod type engine that causes jittery vibrations throughout the rev range of the engine. Only the LS410 engine of the Himalayan features Overhead Cams that reduce the vibrations drastically.
While riding over a long distance, Bajaj Dominar 400 proves to be much more comfortable. The single cylinder, liquid-cooled engine with Single Overhead Cam engine is very smooth. Much smoother than the Royal Enfield motorcycles. People who have experienced Royal Enfield in the past will find the Dominar supremely comfortable and hence, the shift of choice.

First affordable power cruiser of India

Most people choose Royal Enfield motorcycles for their long distance riding capability and are decently comfortable over a long distance. There was no cruiser in the price band till now. Bajaj offered the Dominar at an attractive price that shifted a lot of RE owners towards the new offering from Bajaj.
As Rajiv Bajaj said during the launch, “People who buy Royal Enfield and want to go faster, should buy a Dominar 400.” The Dominar 400 offers comfort, speed and reliability at a very competitive price.

Better accessibility

Bajaj has a better reach in the Indian states while Royal Enfield dealerships are still in limited numbers. While going on long trips, finding a Bajaj service center is much easier than finding that of Royal Enfield. The better penetration of Bajaj dealerships and service centres in the country gives more confidence to buyers. Many previous Royal Enfield owners who have experienced bad service and lack of service centres, now simply seem to be going for the Bajaj Dominar.

Safety matters

Most of the Royal Enfield riders go for long distance riding across India. As we know, none of the Royal Enfield motorcycles offers ABS. According to a recent interview with Eric Vas, President, Bajaj Auto revealed that the ABS variants are outselling the non-ABS models in India. Clearly, people do look for safety when buying a focused touring motorcycle, and Royal Enfield offers none. The Dominar 400 becomes clear choice of many Royal Enfield riders in this case.

Perception about reliability

Even though Royal Enfield motorcycles have become much more reliable than what they used to be in the past the perception is still there about their unreliability. The Royal Enfield owners who may experience such breakdowns shift to Dominar because of Bajaj’s good reputation at building reliable bikes.

Blistering FAST and cheap – 180 kmph cars available for Rs 2 lakh

The good thing about buying used cars is that you can enjoy better features, performance, space, etc. but in a package that’s just about one-fifth the new car price. To put it into perspective, we look at performance-oriented cars you can buy for the price of a used Alto K10 — at about Rs 2 lakh.

1.Honda Accord V6

Two generations old — three when the new Accord comes to India — but the Accord V6 can’t only cross 180 kmph, it can cosset the passengers inside. Apart from Honda’s proven reliability, the vehicle also gets added class and comfort. With the right set of suspension upgrades, the Honda Accord V6 can satiate the enthusiast, too.

2.Skoda Octavia vRS
Sitting in a segment lower than the Accord, the Octavia vRS was one of the first adopters of turbocharged petrol engine. While other traits of a D-segment sedan — space and comfort — were taken care of, it was the driver-focussed engine and chassis that made the vRS stand out. Doing a 180 kmph is possible, and among the other cars here, it’s the one suited the best for racetrack work.

3.Fiat Palio 1.6
The only true hot hatchback, the Fiat Palio 1.6, is also great at registering really high speeds, thanks to the 100 hp engine and a well-balanced chassis. In this case, it maxes out at about 185 kmph. Used ones are available for close to Rs 2 lakh, and if you like your cars to be direct and connected, the Palio is a wonderful choice.

4.Mitsubishi Cedia

Tuners love Japanese cars, and the Cedia happens to be one of the best examples of JDM products that were once available in the market. The 2-liter petrol engine makes 115 hp and 175 Nm of torque — so that’s a good start. It can cross the 180 kmph mark, and with a plenty of upgrades available, you can make a track monster out of it, like the one pictured here. Current market prices for the Cedia are in the Rs 2 lakh range, and that is proper value for money.

5.Chevrolet Optra Magnum

The Chevrolet Optra might have been a D-segment sedan but the 2-liter diesel engined Optra Magnum was a great way to make quick progress. And so it is, even today. Finding a well-kept example is not difficult for about Rs 2 lakh. And with 120 hp and 300 hp backing it up, the Optra Magnum should see the speedometer needle cross the 180 kmph.

TVS Apache RSR 180 Render By Oberdan Bezzi

You would’ve probably come across over a dozen articles in the past where we’ve brought you some really great work by Italian designer Oberdan Bezzi. The render artist has brought to us artistically re-imagined variants of motorcycles from manufacturers such as Bajaj, Mahindra, BSA and JAWA. In latest updates, Bezzi has now developed a concept render of a TVS Apache 180 with a full fairing and a premium set of hardware.

The rendered concept, draped in a bright yellow paint job with contrasting black highlights is a complete overhaul when compared to the 180cc streetfigher. Christened as the TVS Apache RSR180, the concept features an all new design, new headlight, a new fairing, premium upside-down forks instead of the conventional units on the stock motorcycle, new tail light, a reworked exhaust canister and bigger brakes. Bezzi has also dropped the petal disc design on the stock Apache RTR180. The stock seat setup has been replaced by a sportier split saddle whereas the fuel tank, the side and the rear panels get an all new design. The stock rims too have been redesigned for a premium look.
The rendered motorcycle is a brainchild of Oberdan Bezzi and we may never see one such motorcycle in reality unless TVS takes this concept seriously or if someone takes this design to an custom builder.
What do you have to say about Bezzi’s design? Let us know your views through the comments section.
